What is the Humanitarian Charter, and does it still hold the power to guide principled humanitarian action today?
In this session, you’ll hear from the original authors, influential policymakers, and frontline practitioners who shaped the Charter’s vision. They’ll share the motivations behind its creation, how it has steered their work, and why they continue to see its value. But we’ll also hear from those who argue that the Charter no longer serves its purpose, as the landscape of humanitarian action shifts.
As aid professionals, we often get so caught up in the ‘how’ and ‘what’ of our work that we lose sight of the ‘why.’ The urgency of meeting immediate needs can overshadow the broader principles that should guide our actions. The Humanitarian Charter once offered a unifying framework, reminding us of the core values that should guide every decision. But in a world where International Humanitarian Law and Refugee Conventions are increasingly under scrutiny, and where the complexity of global crises seems to spiral out of control, can the Humanitarian Charter still serve as our cornerstone?
With the sector facing repeated failures, and amidst the turbulence of conflict, climate change, and systemic challenges, is the Charter still relevant, how might it be updated from artifact to cornerstone, or is it at risk of crumbling like a house of cards?
Join us in an interactive and thought-provoking session where we will debate the future of the Humanitarian Charter. What does it mean to you? Is it a vital tool for the future of humanitarian action, or is it time to rethink, adapt, or even let go of its guiding principles?
Be part of this critical conversation, hear from experts on both sides, and contribute your perspective. Together, we will explore whether the Humanitarian Charter can continue to unite us around a shared vision—or if it will fade into history as a relic of a bygone era.
Join in and participate by questioning the presenters and making your vote count for who will win the Great Debate…!
