Sphere will convene an extraordinary session of its General Assembly during the week of 5 November to welcome new Sphere members who have joined since the launch of the membership campaign in June. The General Assembly will also elect the new Sphere Executive Committee and its officers.
Sphere membership offers the opportunity for organisations and individuals to join a community of purpose, committed to improving the quality and accountability of humanitarian assistance. This represents an important evolution in the global governance of Sphere, as members are invited to participate in the General Assembly and to actively shape Sphere’s strategic direction. In addition, full members can nominate and be elected to the Executive Committee.
In early September, the Sphere Membership and Nomination Committee will approve new membership requests, marking the first open membership intake. Applications received in the coming months will be assessed on a rolling basis and reviewed quarterly.
During the November General Assembly session, Sphere’s current governance of founding members will join new members to select the Sphere Executive Committee composed of 12 members, with one seat reserved for Humanitarian Standards Partners, and two co-opted from full or associate membership.
The General Assembly will also be the occasion to launch the 2018 Sphere Handbook, marking the 20th anniversary of Sphere and providing updated standards to guide practitioners based on the most far-reaching consultation process in our history. Please mark your calendars now, with details being shared in the coming weeks.
