Description

Founded in 1868, the Turkish Red Crescent Society (TRCS) is not only one of the world’s long-established non-governmental organizations, and one of the major and leading actors of humanitarian relief action. She performs its auxiliary role to the Turkish Government  through supporting the state and society with her status as an “establishment for the benefit of the community” and its role as a supporter of the humanitarian policies of the state in accordance with the  Geneva Conventions. TRC aims to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found, to protect life and health, to ensure respect for the human being, to promote mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and ever lasting peace amongst all peoples. Red Crescent is the symbol of solidarity at the time of need, of equality at the time of suffering, of humanitarianism, neutrality and peace at the heat of the war. TRC shares the fundamental principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement which are humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, volunteer service, unity and universality.

TRCS is considered as a high capacity institution and has experience in delivering crisis response and relief interventions including socio economic empowerment supports in Turkey and abroad. With her 16 delegations abroad and 258 branches, 174 local units, 16 community centers, 9 regional and 23 local disaster response and logistic centers and 85 blood centres; and with the efforts of more its staff volunteers, TRC reaches out the most vulnerable people and contributes to development efforts in the regions it operates. These efforts include not only activities in all phases of disasters (preparation, reduction, response, recovery) and development, but also capacity building initiatives of other National Societies, Civil Society Organizations. (CSOs) and public institutions. As a National Society, Turkish Red Crescent is present and active in 81 cities of Turkey. The primary focus of the National Society is disaster management and has specific roles for the country disaster response plan.

The Turkish Red Crescent has over 10.000 volunteers and run various trainings on Sphere, DRR, Disaster Response and Planning, First Aid, Primary Protection, PSS, etc. The TRCS provides significant capacity to disseminate and advocate for the Sphere Standards.
