Nature-based Solutions for Humanitarians

Nature-based solutions (NbS) are actions that hold the twin objectives of providing for human well-being and protecting the environment. They are a tangible solution that can build immediate and long-term resilience for those affected by crisis.

This interactive module is designed to equip humanitarians with practical knowledge and strategies to incorporate NbS into their work. With seven comprehensive sections, it explores the principles of NbS, showcases real-world applications, and provides actionable guidance for implementation.

As you journey through the course, you will meet three fellow learners who share your curiosity and commitment to making a difference.

Whether you are new to NbS or looking to deepen your understanding, this e-learning module provides a practical introduction.

Way forward:

Sphere remains committed to advancing resources on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) through collaboration with its network of country focal points, members, and partners such as IUCN, IFRC, the FEBA Working Group on NbS in Humanitarian Contexts, and the Climate and Environment Charter Secretariat.

Our objectives include:

  • Translating existing resources into other languages, with an initial focus on Spanish, French, and Arabic. The Spanish version of the NbS guide is expected to be ready by March 2025.
  • Developing enhanced training materials and piloting capacity-strengthening activities in partnership with local organizations.
  • Enriching sector-wide learning by collecting case studies on the local implementation of NbS in humanitarian contexts.
