About Suman SMA Islam
Over the last 25 years, I have been working in the disaster management and humanitarian sector, from implementation of large programmes at the field level up to national/ international level strategic involvement with political and donors’ perspective. I am a founder member of Disaster Forum, one of the pioneer organisation contributed to global disaster management knowledge resources since 1994. My theoretical base build with the International Disaster Management Training of Royal Military Collage of Science, Cranfield University, UK in 1998. I had contributed in developing the HAP accountability and quality management standards in 2006 and a Sphere Standard trainer in the global roster register since 2006; undertaken a pivotal role in promoting the Standards through translating and establishing the Sphere Community Bangladesh (SCB).
My strategic leadership, programme design, development and implementation expertise are enriched with the experiences in Oxfam, DFID (UKAids), Save the Children and CARE; played a vital role in promoting community focused humanitarian response and human resources for right-based humanitarian actions, monitoring and coordination in Bangladesh. Experience also includes leading the Gender Justice & Diversity Division of BRAC and Terre des hommes on child labour and sexual & reproductive health rights of adolescents.
My technical expertise enriched with research, studies, evaluation and development of training, capacity building and communication materials, provided technical support to international, national and leading local NGOs in Bangladesh. I am Member of Professionals in Humanitarian Assistance and Protection (PHAP) and International Humanitarian Studies Association.
In my current position Director, Humanitarian Leadership Academy Bangladesh, my effort focused on promoting localisation of humanitarian professionalism and competencies based on CHS Alliances frameworks. I had undertaken number of studies and developed training, learning materials instrumentalising different learning methodologies includes eLearning, blended and face-to-face trainings. Directly provided training to around 800 local forefront humanitarian aid workers and manages engaged in Rohingya humanitarian crisis response.
